At Electrorad, we’re always aware of how our products impact our customers’ lives, as well as the wider environment. We understand concerns around electric heating and where the energy comes from – and whether they’re a genuinely greener way to heat our homes.

We explored this in 2017 and are taking another look in 2024 to see how times have changed since then. Here, we’ll present a fascinating look at the UK’s electricity production and how this impacts the use of our electric radiators.

Learnings About the UK’s Electricity Production

Traditionally, electric heating has been thought to have a high carbon impact, since UK electricity is produced in fossil fuel-burning power stations. The good news, we’ve discovered, is that times have changed – and are continuing to do so.

In 2017, we saw a marked increase in wind and solar generation with the carbon content of electricity in the national grid falling considerably:

In 2024, these trends are set to continue with an even brighter picture of the UK’s energy production. Nowadays, at least 71% of our electricity comes from low-carbon sources and sources like coal and gas have reduced from 8.3% to 0.0% and 40.9% to 11.6% respectively. Finally, some good news!

How Does This Impact Electric Heating?

This rapid decarbonisation was reflected in a 23% reduction in carbon emissions from SAP 2012 to the updated SAP 2016 – and then again in a 73.8% decrease from SAP 2016 to SAP 10.

These are substantial and remarkable changes which will make it far easier for electric radiators to be specified for new dwellings and to meet the carbon emissions targets.

2020 was the first year that the majority of energy in the UK came from renewable sources. This was a 43% mix of wind, solar, bioenergy and hydroelectric sources. If this continues, electric heating is set to become the domestic heating solution with the lowest carbon impact.

The Future Is Electric

Electric systems are revolutionising the way we heat our homes, offices, schools – the list goes on. With the UK’s strategy to reach net zero by 2050, and for all electricity to come from 100% zero-carbon generation by 2035, they are the best way to future-proof your domestic or commercial space.
